Miseria Church Upgrades Tier List
What to buy with Dark Blessings after every Reborn—and what can wait.
The Church is Miseria’s permanent power fantasy. You Reborn, earn Dark Blessings, and spend them on upgrades that do not wipe with XP, gold, or floor progress. That makes this tier list the highest-leverage page on the wiki for long-term speed. Pair it with the Reborn planner and stage advice in Mid Game Build.
Developer clarification from the demo era still frames the loop: blessings and purchased Church levels persist; temporary run resources do not. Buy like an investor, not a tourist.
Ranking criteria
We rank for progression per blessing, idle comfort, and synergy with common builds (Knight thorns core, Alchemist skills, growing party). Tooltip size alone does not earn an S. A magnet node that doubles forge uptime can beat a damage node you cannot afford to utilize yet.
S tier — buy early, rank often
Thorns / spikes line. The standout combat investment for most players. Contact damage becomes reciprocal kill power; with a Vigor floor from Stats Explained, thorns clear packs while you AFK. Frontliners from Party and Characters exist partly to host this fantasy.
Magnet / auto-gold QOL. Not glamorous; mandatory. Mid and late clear volume wastes gold on the ground without vacuum. Economy is damage with extra steps because the blacksmith multiplies everything you permanently unlocked.
A tier — core multipliers
Tempered / base combat damage nodes (names vary; think flat or percent strike power such as Tempered Steel-style passives). These shorten the boring re-clear of early floors after every Reborn. Excellent second purchase once thorns or economy has a foothold.
Survivability / defense blessings. Anything that keeps the party standing amplifies thorns and prevents idle runs from soft-locking on a spike. Especially valuable approaching Floor 19 checks.
XP or gold gain multipliers. If they stack cleanly with magnet QOL, they accelerate both levels and forge. Take them when combat foundations exist so the extra resources convert into push power.
B tier — strong after foundations
Skill / mana / Intelligence-facing Church nodes. Rise in value after Strange Plant unlocks the Alchemist. Before that, they are often premature.
Agility / tempo style combat QOL. Nice when you already survive; weaker as a first blessing sink.
Extra party facilitation nodes (if present in your patch). Good when a new slot just opened; middling if you are still duo-focused.
C tier — situational
Narrow anti-boss only nodes that do nothing for trash clear. Tiny percent upgrades with steep blessing curves before your tree has S/A ranks. Redundant damage when thorns already solve the same floors.
D / skip-for-now
Cosmetics, ultra-late prestige flex nodes, and anything you cannot explain in one sentence as “this makes the next run faster or safer.” If you need a justification paragraph, it is not a first-cycle buy.
Suggested spend orders
First Reborn poverty list: economy/magnet → first thorns rank → one tempered-style damage node. Post-Alchemist list: thorns ranks → magnet maxing → skill nodes → defense. Floor 19 push list: ensure thorns + defense online, magnet active, then dump overflow into damage/XP.
Compare temporary gold spend separately via Upgrade Priority—never confuse forge shopping with Church shopping.
Common mistakes
- Spreading one rank across every icon instead of finishing S-tier lines.
- Ignoring thorns because a damage tooltip looks larger.
- Buying skill nodes before the Alchemist exists.
- Saving blessings “for later” while sitting on a dead run—later is what Reborn is for (How to Reborn).
- Forgetting that Church power assumes you still rebuild stats each run (Early Game Build).
Cross-links
Return to Tier List Hub for character rankings, keep Builds Hub open for stage plans, and skim Getting Started if the Church UI is still confusing. Featured for a reason: most Mixed-review frustration around pacing improves when blessings stop being spent randomly.
Revisit this list after patches; the roles (thorns, vacuum, tempered damage, defense) stay stable even if labels shift.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
What is the best first Church upgrade?
Take magnet/auto-gold or a first thorns/spikes rank depending on whether gold pickup or combat stall is your bigger pain—both are S-tier.
Do Church upgrades reset on Reborn?
No. Dark Blessings spent at the Church persist. Only XP, gold, and floor progress wipe.
Why is thorns ranked above raw damage?
Thorns turns survivability into clear speed and stays strong while idle. Raw damage without survival often wastes blessings on deaths.
When should I buy skill-focused Church nodes?
After the Alchemist (Strange Plant) is online and Intelligence builds matter. Earlier, prioritize thorns, economy, and general combat.
How do I plan a full blessing spend?
Use this tier list for priority and the Reborn planner to sequence purchases before each reset.
Should I max one upgrade or spread points?
Finish ranks on S-tier lines before decorating the rest of the tree. Depth beats a forest of level-1 novelties.
