Miseria Character Tier List
Who deserves gold, levels, and attention as your party expands.
Characters in Miseria unlock on a schedule, not a gacha banner. That makes a character tier list less about “meta picks” and more about when someone becomes worth forge gold. Use this page with Party and Characters, Stats Explained, and the Church upgrades tier list so roster power and permanent blessings move together.
Ranking lens
We grade for descent progression, idle reliability, and synergy with thorns / auto combat. Single-player only—no multiplayer fills a weak slot. A character who needs babysitting every minute ranks lower than one who keeps clearing while you are away.
S tier
Knight (starter). Permanent S for practical purposes: always available, scales with Strength/Agility, hosts thorns/spikes cleanly, and teaches the whole game. Neglecting the Knight after unlocking flashier allies is a classic way to stall. Keep armor current; a dead S-tier carry is an F-tier run.
A tier
Alchemist (Strange Plant unlock). The first real build multiplier. Intelligence-linked skills change elite and boss patterns that pure auto-swings struggle with. Ranks A rather than default S only because you must unlock and gear them—on a fully funded duo, the Alchemist is mandatory mid-game power (Mid Game Build).
B tier
Later party slots (general). Additional members are high potential but gold-hungry. They rise to A when their kit covers a hole (extra thorns body, burst, utility) and you can afford blacksmith investment without starving the core duo. They fall to C if recruited and ignored.
Treat “new slot just opened” as a project: one upgrade cycle dedicated to bringing them online, guided by Upgrade Priority, before claiming you have a three-person party.
C tier
Underbuilt duplicates of the Knight. If a new character is played as “more Strength go brrr” without reading their kit, they add little beyond XP split pain. Specialize or park them.
Niche situational allies that only shine with late Church nodes you do not own yet. Park blessings into foundations first (How to Reborn).
Role grades vs letter grades
Sometimes a B-tier unlock is S-tier for a job: the only skill bot you have, or the only way to stabilize Floor 19’s narrative gate. Letter grades assume default progression; your walls may promote someone temporarily. Re-check after major Church purchases—thorns can make an extra frontliner more valuable than another backline glass cannon.
Investment priority checklist
- Knight always combat-ready.
- Unlock Alchemist via Strange Plant; fund Intelligence + Vigor.
- Buy Church thorns/magnet so the roster’s idle clear converts to gold.
- Open new slots only when the forge can feed them (Early Game Build habits still apply).
- Re-tier your personal list after each Reborn using the Reborn planner.
Synergy notes
- Thorns builds want meaty bodies → Knight and sturdy later slots climb.
- Skill builds want the Alchemist online before Church skill nodes.
- Economy QOL raises everyone’s tier by making gear realistic.
- Steam Cloud saves the roster; there is still no multiplayer substitute for a missing role.

Raise the people who clear floors. Bench the rest until Dark Blessings and gold say otherwise.
One last mid-run habit: after any unlock cutscene, open town before you dive ten floors deeper. Confirm the new character has a weapon, a scrap of armor, and a primary stat plan from Stats Explained. That five-minute forge stop is often the difference between an A-tier recruit and a C-tier portrait clogging your XP split. Then resume the descent with Mid Game Build pacing instead of treating recruitment as an automatic power spike.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Is the Knight still good after unlocking others?
Yes. The Knight remains S-tier for progression and thorns hosting. Keep them geared even after the Alchemist joins.
Where does the Alchemist rank?
A-tier once unlocked via Strange Plant and properly funded with Intelligence. They are mandatory for healthy mid-game comps.
Are later party slots always upgrades?
Only if you can gear them. An unfunded extra member can slow progression by splitting gold and XP.
Should Church upgrades change character tiers?
Yes. Thorns raise sturdy frontliners; skill nodes raise the Alchemist. Re-evaluate after major blessing spends.
Is there multiplayer ranking?
No. Miseria is single-player. All rankings assume your local party only.
What should I read with this list?
Party and Characters for unlocks, Church Upgrades Tier List for blessings, and Mid Game Build for stage application.
