Miseria Blacksmith Equipment Guide
Turn abyss gold into multipliers your party can feel on the next floor.
The blacksmith is Miseria’s temporary power workshop. Monsters drop gold; you return to town; forge upgrades raise the equipment that multiplies your party’s attributes. Because combat is automatic, gear quality is one of the few levers you fully control between Church purchases. This page explains how to think about equipment so Upgrade Priority can give you a shopping order instead of vibes.
What the forge actually does
Blacksmith upgrades improve weapons, armor, and related slots that scale the five stats covered in Stats Explained: Strength, Agility, Vigor, Will, and Intelligence. A stronger sword on a Strength-stacked Knight is not “more content”—it is a multiplier on the build you already chose in Early Game Build. Buying random slots hoping something sticks is how gold disappears without floors moving.
Think in bottlenecks:
- Kill time too high? Weapon / damage slots for your carry.
- Deaths too high? Armor / Vigor-facing slots.
- Skills feel weak? Intelligence-facing gear on the Alchemist after Strange Plant unlock (Party and Characters).
Character-specific forging
Knight: Prioritize physical weapon upgrades and enough armor to stand in thorns range. Church spikes from the Church upgrades tier list want a living host; naked thorns theorycrafting fails in practice.
Alchemist: Do not copy the Knight’s cart. Fund the pieces that amplify Intelligence and keep the Alchemist from folding in melee splash. A duo where only the Knight is forged is a solo run with extra XP tax.
Later slots: Bring each new member to a minimum viable kit before calling them part of the party. The character tier list assumes funding, not portraits.
Gear versus Reborn
Forge progress sits on the temporary side of the prestige split. When you Reborn, expect to rebuild gold and equipment while keeping Dark Blessings and Church ranks. That is why mid-run perfectionism is expensive: the last hour of tiny forge taps before a reset often should have been a reset. Use the Reborn planner when you feel the sunk-cost itch.
Conversely, after a Reborn with magnet / auto-gold online, revisit the blacksmith early and often. Permanent economy nodes exist to restock temporary gear faster—ignore that loop and you waste blessings.
Synergy with builds and milestones
Mid Game Build treats Floor 19 as a checkpoint: arrive with core duo gear appropriate to your Church rank, not starter scraps and hope. If you bounce on a narrative gate, compare “one more armor tier” against “one more thorns rank after Reborn.” Sometimes the forge is the answer; sometimes it is a distraction from permanent power.
Idle sessions should happen on floors your current gear can already clear. Equipment is how you raise that stable floor—Church is how you raise the ceiling after resets.
Practical forging habits
- Visit town on a schedule during long idles; do not hoard infinite gold “for later” while under-geared.
- Spend in batches on the bottleneck, then reassess clear speed.
- Split gold across active party members intentionally.
- Stop heavy forging when a Reborn is clearly next.
- Re-read Upgrade Priority when income suddenly jumps.
- Keep Getting Started habits: town → forge → descend → repeat.
Mistakes to avoid
- Equal upgrades in every slot forever.
- Ignoring armor because damage numbers are prettier.
- Forging a bench character you never deploy.
- Blaming Mixed Steam scores on RNG when your forge is untouched.
- Treating items as permanent like Church nodes—they are not.
Return to the Items Hub for the category overview, and keep build pages open so every anvil strike matches a stat plan. The blacksmith will not make choices for you; it will ruthlessly multiply the ones you already made.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Does blacksmith gear carry across Reborn?
Plan as if forge progress is temporary with gold and floors. Church upgrades are the permanent layer—rebuild gear each cycle.
Should I upgrade weapons or armor first?
Weapons if clear speed is the wall; armor if deaths are the wall. Reassess after each batch of purchases.
How does gear interact with thorns?
Armor and Vigor keep you alive so Church thorns/spikes keep damaging enemies. Dead characters proc nothing.
Do Alchemists use the same gear path as Knights?
No. Prioritize Intelligence-facing and survivability pieces for the Alchemist instead of cloning the Knight’s physical stack.
When should I stop forging and Reborn?
When gold buys tiny gains and Church blessings would accelerate the next run more—see How to Reborn and the Reborn planner.
Where is the spend order checklist?
Use the Upgrade Priority page for a concrete sequence across slots and party members.
